Ridley Scott Is Producing a Sequel Miniseries to 2001: A Space Odyssey

Ridley Scott Is Producing a Sequel Miniseries to 2001: A Space Odyssey

Great news for Arthur C. Clarke and/or Ridley Scott fans (in other words, everyone). The Blade Runner and Alien director just signed on to produce a Syfy Channel miniseries version of Clarke's 2001 sequel, 3001: The Final Odyssey.

Based on the novel of the same name, 3001 picks up with Dr. Poole, who wakes up 1000 years after HAL-9000's infamous pod-bay door-based temper tantrum, when his body is revived by and ultimately returned back to wildly changed Earth. According to Slashfilm:

Some of its notable features include the BrainCap, a brain-computer interface technology; genetically-engineered dinosaur servants; a space drive; and four gigantic space elevators located evenly around the Equator. Human beings have also colonised the Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto. TMA-1, the black monolith found on the Moon in 1999, has been brought to Earth in 2006 and installed in front of the United Nations Building in New York City.

And you'll all be happy to hear that original director Stanley Kubrick has thrown his full support behind the project, although whether or not that means any actual Kubrick involvement remains to be seen. We'll find out soon enough, though—the miniseries should be debuting sometime in 2015. [SlashFilm via The Verge]
