Redbox Instant Will Shut Down Streaming Video on October 7th

Redbox Instant Will Shut Down Streaming Video on October 7th

Redbox Instant, Verizon's Netflix-battling streaming movie service and the companion to the automated DVD rental kiosk in your grocery store's entryway, is shutting down on October 7th at 11:59PM. Better get your binge-watching out of your system now.

Redbox Instant first hit the scene in December of 2012, tempting users with lower-than-Netflix pricing and a catalog different enough from Netflix to merit consideration. But Redbox Instant was never able to put up a winning fight against the streaming juggernauts of Netflix and Hulu.

By all indications, the DVD-rental half of Redbox's service will go on unaltered. Redbox will contact former streaming users about refunds beginning October 10th. [Redbox Instant via Engadget]
